Students begin this fourth-grade unit by observing a perplexing phenomenon. A series of photos show thousands of bags of chips that washed up on a beach. These images and the accompanying news article lead students to wonder about other related phenomena, which in turn lead to questions about: 1) What caused all those chips to get on the shore?  2) Where did the chips come from? 3) How do objects move on water?
