The grade 1 Sounds unit is the first half of a physical science learning sequence on sounds and light. Students make sense of the anchor phenomenon -- the sound made by emergency sirens -- through three-dimensional learning experiences, identifying that sounds cause vibrations, vibrations cause sound, and that sound is used to communicate over distance. Students are able to directly observe sounds they hear around them on the playground, conduct investigations on how sound is made, and explore the cause and effect relationship between sounds and vibrations. The students also design devices that use sound to communicate over a distance.
